FUEL SYSTEMS: Maintaining the fuel system involves changing the fuel filters periodically, checking the choke mechanisms, for proper operation, and replacing the air filter as necessary. Most fuel system problems stem from either dirty air or fuel filters. Late model cars have no provision for carburetor adjustment and if you feel you have a carburetor problem, I suggest you refer to your mechanic for proper diagnosis. The most important maintenance procedure you can perform for your engine is to change the oil and filter at recommended intervals. Also look for oil leaks and periodically check your PCV valve for proper operation. The PCV valve is an emission control check valve that regulates excessive crankcase for oiling system vapors to the combustion chamber where they burned. The oil pump and distributor are driven by a drive shaft which runs off the spinning cam shaft. A timing belt requires no oiling system lubrication but if your engine has a timing belt, have it replaced at the recommended intervals to avoid major engine damage should it break while the engine is running. Engines with a timing chain or gear system require no maintenance. Replace any leaking gaskets or seals as well as any worn engine parts to avoid further engine damage in the future.
